A New Chapter for Cheyenne Fire Rescue: Our First Change of Command Ceremony
This past Thursday, June 26, 2025, marked a truly historic day for Cheyenne Fire Rescue (CFR) as we held our first-ever Change of Command ceremony. This significant event symbolized the official transition of leadership from the esteemed Chief John Kopper to our new Chief, Andrew Dykshorn.
For those unfamiliar, a Change of Command ceremony is a time-honored tradition, particularly within military and public safety organizations. It’s a formal, symbolic passing of responsibility, authority, and accountability from one commanding officer to another. More than just a procedural formality, it’s a powerful moment that assures continuity of command and provides an opportunity to recognize the outgoing leader’s contributions while officially welcoming the incoming one.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Chief John Kopper for his exceptional dedication and years of service. Chief Kopper, your commitment to our nation through your military service, and your unwavering leadership and tireless efforts within the Cheyenne community and Cheyenne Fire Rescue, have left an indelible mark. Thank you for your profound impact and for selflessly serving our community.
Welcoming Chief Andrew Dykshorn
With the deepest respect for the past and great anticipation for the future, we warmly welcome and congratulate Chief Andrew Dykshorn on his new role as Chief of Cheyenne Fire Rescue. We are excited for this new chapter under his leadership and wish him the very best as he guides our department forward.
A Beautiful Ceremony
The ceremony itself was a truly beautiful and moving occasion. We were honored to have Lt. Craig Jamison’s powerful rendition of the National Anthem set a patriotic tone. The precision and dignity of the Honor Guard were exemplary, and Deputy Chief Don Wood served as a gracious and effective host for the proceedings. Many heartfelt speeches were delivered, including thoughtful remarks from Mayor Patrick Collins, all underscoring the significance of this transition and the deep respect held for both Chiefs.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this such a memorable and wonderful event. We are incredibly proud to inaugurate this new tradition within Cheyenne Fire Rescue, and we look forward to the future under Chief Dykshorn’s leadership!
