Entry Level Firefighter

Interested in becoming a CFR Firefighter?

Becoming a firefighter is a rewarding career with the ability to give back to the community and help those in their time of need.  At Cheyenne Fire Rescue (CFR) we pride ourselves in providing the highest quality service that we can.  The citizens of Cheyenne and anyone passing through our community can rest assured that if they need emergency services that we will be there quickly and have the skills and resources to help them with their emergency.  If you are interested in a rewarding career with CFR then there are necessary steps to accomplish this goal.  We are looking for motivated, thinking firefighters who are capable of learning and perfecting the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are required to perform the job at a high skill level.

The process for becoming a Cheyenne Fire Rescue Firefighter includes a written examination, a current valid CPAT card, and an interview.  Successful candidates who pass the entrance exam will be placed in order by exam score on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is valid for 1 year. As positions become available we will use the list to call in candidates for an in-person final chief officer’s interview and a conditional job offer will be made to successful candidate(s).  Please read below for further information.

Testing Process

Candidates are required to complete the Exam, Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and Public Safety Self Assessments (PSSA) through their NTN account to be considered for the interview phase.

Candidates must have completed their exam and required components before this date. The top 75 candidates who have a passing score of 75% or greater will be invited to the interview phase.  The interview will be done virtually on NTN and recorded for scoring.

Applications will be provided to the top 75 candidates who have achieved a passing score of 75% on the National Testing Network Exam.

Job Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age on the date of examination.  Applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America.  Applicants must possess a high school diploma or the equivalent.  A valid Driver’s License is required.

Residency: Upon hiring, Members will be required to be a resident and be domiciled within a sixty-mile radius of the Cheyenne Fire Rescue Headquarters Station I, located at 716 West 19th Street, Cheyenne, Wyoming. Residency requirements must be met within three months of the Member’s date of hire or six months within the discretion of the Fire Chief.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have the ability to read/speak English. Correctable vision of 20/20 or better required. Pre-employment physical, background check, driving record check and a drug screen are required after a conditional job offer is made.  Applicants must successfully complete the fire academy after they are hired.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

A CURRENT VALID CPAT CARD IS NOT REQUIRED TO TEST. HOWEVER, A VALID CURRENT CPAT CARD IS REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION TO THE CITY OF CHEYENNE, NO EXCEPTIONS.

The nearest CPAT testing site to Cheyenne, Wyoming, is AIMS Community College in Greeley, Colorado. Other CPAT testing sites can be found using an internet search, keyword CPAT.
