Building Pre-Inspection

Preparing for your fire inspection helps ensure your business is safe, compliant, and ready to operate without delays. Cheyenne Fire Rescue provides the following checklist to help you meet inspection requirements and avoid common violations.

Before Your Inspection

Use this checklist to confirm your building meets basic fire and life safety requirements:

Fire Protection Systems

  • Fire extinguishers are installed, accessible, and appropriate for your business
  • All extinguishers have been inspected and serviced within the past year
  • Extinguishers are mounted properly (top no higher than 5 feet above floor)
  • Travel distance to an extinguisher does not exceed 75 feet
  • Kitchen hood and duct systems (if applicable) have been serviced within 6 months
  • Fire alarm and/or sprinkler systems are installed (if required) and serviced annually
  • Sprinkler heads are clean, unobstructed, and properly aligned

Exits and Emergency Access

  • Exit signs are clearly visible, illuminated, and functioning
  • Emergency lighting is operational (test buttons function properly)
  • All exits, aisles, stairways, and walkways are clear of obstructions
  • Fire-rated doors are functional and not blocked open
  • Address numbers are clearly visible from the exterior (minimum 4 inches tall)
  • Suite numbers are posted and easy to identify

Building and Site Safety

  • Gas shut-off valves are visible and accessible
  • Fire hydrants (if present) are unobstructed and maintained
  • Driveways and alleys are free of debris and accessible
  • Heating and air systems are regularly maintained with clean filters
  • Mechanical and equipment rooms are free of combustible storage
  • Storage is kept at least 2 feet below ceilings

Electrical Safety

  • Wiring is in good condition (no fraying or damage)
  • Electrical panels have proper covers and labeled breakers
  • At least 36 inches of clearance is maintained around panels
  • No unsafe use of extension cords or multi-plug adapters
  • Electrical outlets near water sources are GFI protected
  • Electrical rooms and key access points are clearly labeled

Hazardous Materials & Equipment

  • Compressed gas cylinders are secured and properly stored
  • Flammable and combustible liquids are stored within allowed limits
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS/MSDS) are available when required

Additional Requirements

  • Fire department lock box is installed and updated with current keys and contacts
  • Construction or remodeling projects are fully permitted and approved
  • Drop ceiling tiles are intact and properly installed (not missing or damaged)

Common Inspection Violations

During inspections, Fire Prevention personnel often identify the following issues:

  • Blocked exits or fire equipment
  • Expired or missing fire extinguisher inspections
  • Improper use of extension cords
  • Obstructed sprinkler heads
    Missing or non-functioning exit signage
  • Poor housekeeping (storage, debris, or combustible buildup)

Addressing these items ahead of time can help your inspection go smoothly.
