Fire Watch Information for Building Owners

A fire watch is required when a building’s fire protection systems—such as fire alarms or sprinkler systems—are out of service. During this time, a responsible individual must continuously monitor the property to ensure occupant safety and quickly identify any signs of fire or emergency.

Cheyenne Fire Rescue requires fire watch procedures to be implemented in accordance with fire code regulations. This includes maintaining a detailed log of patrols, documenting any hazards, and ensuring immediate communication with emergency services if needed.

What is a Fire Watch?

A fire watch is a temporary safety measure used to:
  • Monitor a building for signs of fire or unsafe conditions
  • Ensure occupants can safely evacuate if needed
  • Provide early detection and notification in the absence of automatic systems
Individuals assigned to fire watch duties must remain alert, patrol the building at regular intervals, and have a reliable way to contact emergency services.

When is a Fire Watch Required?

A fire watch may be required in situations including:

  • Fire alarm systems are out of service
  • Fire sprinkler systems are impaired or shut down
  • Construction, maintenance, or system repairs impact fire protection
  • Directed by the Fire Marshal or Fire Prevention Division

Fire watch requirements will remain in effect until all systems are fully restored and operational.

Fire Watch Responsibilities

During a fire watch, designated personnel are expected to:
  • Conduct regular patrols of all affected areas Watch for smoke, fire, or hazardous conditions
  • Keep all exits clear and accessible
  • Notify occupants of any emergency
  • Immediately contact 911 in the event of a fire
